Don’t be fooled by the small size of Mgahinga National Park – with such a small size and more than half of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas, primate lovers will not be disappointed.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in spectacular scenery and abundant wildlife.
The three extinct Virunga Volcanoes make up the centrepiece of this park, and their forested slopes host endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and several other species of monkeys. In fact, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is home to more than half of the world’s population of the endangered mountain gorillas.
Gorilla tracking is park’s most popular activity, though volcano hiking is also a popular draw. There are a number of hikes in the park, ranging from an 8-hour trip up and down Mt. Muhabura, to gentle walks across the slopes for bird spotting and wildlife viewing. Those interested in cultural excursions will not be disappointed, as the park is home to Batwa tribes that are eager for cultural exchange.
